He bought me a green Mercedes and I went to Houston to look for work and make some money. Houston was a boom town.. I got a job with the biggest pawnbroker in Houston, Mr. Toppy Hold, a gangster really at his 'Action Jewelry and Loan' downtown. He was in cahoots with the J.H.Rose Truck Lines Inc.. They had a Lear jet and the captain of the vice squad, all the police in there pockets.. Once we gave a party and Lynn Anderson sang and A.J. Foyt was there, so, it was the good old boys mob, we kept the Italians out for the most part.. I knew there was corruption going on, a racketeering enterprise.. My job was to sell legal out of pawn jewelry to my River Oaks Country Club friends like Ljuba di Portanove married to Ricky the flamboyant heir to the Hugh Roy Cullen fortune. They had a Lear jet too, they called it the Taxi. We went to Mexico on it, and Europe. Later she moved to Marbella after her divorce in 1972, and bought a beach house in Spain.. So, Ricky bought a Stradivarius Violin from me someone had pawned and a nice huge Picasso, also a solid 18k gold necklace as well that was in the vault, very expensive stuff!! There were no loose stones for me, just legal out of pawn jewelry with paper work, nothing was hot, that I sold. I could prove it!! Ljuba introduced me to her cousin in law Mrs. Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson the 'alpha female' of the Houston social set, she controlled the foundation, of Hugh Roy Cullen famous wildcatter oil baron, she was really rich had the huge big money. Remember the movie "Giant" about that family. She was trying to marry off her daughter Elizabeth, my age of 19. She was giving a debutante ball to advertise Beth, and invited me... B.B.King was going to play at the River Oaks Country Club. I went to Neiman Marcus bought a tux, took a Cartier watch and a diamond ring out of the pawn shop and went in my black Fleetwood Cadillac. Beth was nice but not really my type.. Lillie her other sister was better but the best for me was the younger sister Alison Susan Robertson.
