Kenneth Leroy Smithey ... at the Grove !!
In 1963, I was thirteen years old , my Dad Kenneth Leroy Smithey worked for Rexall Drug Company and drugstore magnate Jane & Justin Dart of Dart Industries they owned Rexall. They were friends of Ronald Reagan, "The Kitchen Cabinet", and John Bowles was the president of the Rexall Drug Company. My dad took me to L.A. for a convention, I remember we packed our bags and drove to the airport in his white 1962 T - Bird. We stayed at the now gone Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles .. I loved that hotel, it had a barber shop that was class all the way, that is were Norton Simon got his hair cut and bought his first work of art for his Hancock Park Mansion at the art gallery in the hotel. Rexall had the largest drug store in the world at Beverly and La Cienega , and had more franchises in America than McDonalds has restaurants today. My Dad sold over ten million dollars worth of those franchises in Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas. It wasjust after my birthday around the 21st of August that Barbra Streisand had, her, west coast, Debut !! At the famous 'Coconut Grove' night club .. at the Ambassador Hotel. She was sold out for the run of her shows but because of Rexall we got tickets and went .... My dad looked like the guy on "Mad Men" he wore a blue silk suit and a red silk tie .. I had on a red shark skin type sport coat - black tie .... So Barbara, blew the roof off, of that night club I mean she KILLED, she worked it!!! .. I saw Natalie Wood, Henry Fonda, and Gracie Allen, and Mary Livingston Benny who I met and knew fourteen years later in 1978. What a thrill. Barbara's debut was so great. I was Mr. West Hollywood from then on .. Dad bought all the Barbra Streisand albums after that!!!
